He's A Leaver
Lori Lieberman
He's a leaver
Why does he run away
Why can't he change his ways
I'm not like all the rest
Never made him feel he was second best
And I wish I knew what I could do
To have him back again
But he's a leaver
He always has been that way
He told me he'd never stay
I never realized
Foolishly I thought I could change his mind
And I wish I knew waht I could do
To make him want to stay
I tried so hard to stay cool
I played it cool
Unselfishly
Every time I touched him
It was just him
I didn't want to see
He's a leaver
Where will he go this time
Who will he leave behind
I can't forget that face
Can't forget that look as he walked away
And I wish I knew what I could do
To make him want to stay
He's a leaver
Women Like Me
Lori Lieberman
I know a woman, the same as I
With blonde in her hair and blue in her eyes
There is a man who's married to her
He says he loves me
I wonder
There is a woman, the same as I
Who loves with the shame and sees through the lies
If it is love that we're asking for
Why can'twe believe we're worthy of more
Oh women like me
We never let go
Women like me
And there will always be
Women like me
We share one life divided in three
For him and for her and a little for me
The rain it will freeze, the fire will burn
One heart it will ache, the other will yearn
Oh women like me
We never say no
Women like me
And he will always seek
Women like me
Secrets and promises, anger and blame
And every night the moon above us
Says he will change
And every time we think it's over
It's always the same
Always the same
Oh women like me
We never give up
Women like me
Women like me
And he will always leave
Women like me
My Heart Longs For You
Lori Lieberman
Like the light of the sun
Like the white of the moon
Like the wind needs its song
How my heart longs for you
Every day, every night
Every page, every hour
Every tear, right or wrong
How my heart longs for you
How could you know
How could you see
Are you alone
Do you long for me
Like the light of the sun
Like a soul soft and true
Like a child cries for love
How my heart longs for you
When shadows fall
In restless sleep
You'll hear me call
A sound sad and deep
Like the light of the sun
Like the white of the moon
Like the wind needs its song
How my heart longs for you
I'll Never Have The Heart (To Leave This Town)
Mike Reid, Steve Seskin
Ole Mister Riley he's a regular clock
You can tell the time of day by his morning walk
And Betty's cafe always fill up fast
Down at Henry's station, Henry pumps the gas
Sure as the sun sets over the ridge
There will always be lovers at the covered bridge
I'll never have the heart to leave this town
Tried a time or two but I turned around
No matter where I go this is where I'm bound
No I'll never have the heart
To leave this town
You can hear the latest news at the barber shop
Did the county fix the road, will this rain ever stop
You can catch a double feature at the movie house
Grab a bite at Betty's when the show lets out
And the bus at the station leaves twice a day
There's always someone lookin' for a better way
I'll never have the heart to leave this town
Tried a time or two but I turned around
No matter where I got this is where I'm bound
And I'll never have the heart
To leave this town
Time After Time
Lori Lieberman
Time after time he wondered why
Out of the blue she said good-bye
He shook his head, he smiled and said
"It's only for a while", but then
The days they turned into lonely nights
The cases of beer and T.V. guides
"It's only make believe", he said, and
"She'll come back to me", he said
But did you say you loved her?
No, I never told her so
Did you say you need her?
Well, she surely must have known
And time after time as time goes by
All he can do is sit and cry
His friends would try to make him see
His love is a futility
But he believes in miracles and water from a stone
And never was she so in love
And never so alone
And night after night she cries at the dark
She yells at the moon and screams at the stars
"There are times when I miss him so
And I wait by the telephone
He doesn't care, or he'd have let me know
It's just as well I had the nerve to go"
And night after night he cries at the dark
He yells at the moon and he screams at the stars
"I've had enough of this foolish act,
And enough of this time has passed
As for love, she was my first and last
I would have told her if she'd only asked"
Blue Memory
Lori Lieberman
In the light of the day
I forget that it's over
I imagine you're here
With your hand on my shoulder
I've got to find you
How can it be
That a love can slip away
Do you still think of me
Oh, baby,if I only knew
If someone had told me
I'd have held on to you
Oh darlin', if I'd only seen
Maybe I'd be more to you
Than a blue memory
When the hummingbird hums
I'll be long, long gone
Spend the rest of my nights
Wonderin' what went wrong
Until I find you
There's no other way
I'll hang on to my heart
For as long as it takes
Oh baby, if I only knew
If someone had told me
I'd have held on to you
Oh darlin', if I'd only seen
Maybe we'd be more today
Than a blue memory
With love there's just no guarantee
If falls apart so easily
It is the cure in times of need
It is the knife that makes you bleed
From the look on your face
I could tell that it's over
Said you'd keep me warm
Then you gave me the cold shoulder
Come on, baby, tell me the truth
How'd you look me in the heart
When you said, "I love you"?
Oh, baby if I only knew
If someone had told me
I'd have let go of you
Oh, darlin' if I'd only seen
Maybe we'd be more today
Than a blue memory
It Was A Time
Lori Lieberman
It was a while ago
And I was nothing more than a child
All of my thoughts and poems
A while ago
A time ago
Killing Me Softly
Fox/Gimbel, based on a poem by Lori Lieberman
I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
To listen for a while
And there he was, this young boy
A stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling me whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling me whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
He sang as if it he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
As if I wasn't there
But he was there, this stranger
Singing clear and strong
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling me whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
A Thousand Dreams
Lori Lieberman
The sun goes down, I go down with it
Into a night of a thousand dreams
The moon goes 'round,I go 'round with it
Just for a moment my heart is free
I dream we're like we used to be
Dancing on this earth
No tears to cry, no sad goodbyes
No secrets in the dirt
If we are blind will you give us your eyes to see
If we are weak will you steady our fall
If you can hear, make us one lasting promise
You will remember
They will remember
The times of our lives
The sun goes down, I go down with it
Searching for answers, I fall asleep
The world goes 'round,I go 'round with it
And pray for the chance that you'll come to me
And say the worst is over now
There's no more need to hide
No one will look the other way
The young will never die
If we are blind you will give us your eyes to see
If we are weak you will steady our fall
Oh what a dream I had, filled with such promise
Out of the embers
We could remember
The hope in our lives
Reasons spoken
Filtered through sand and through time
Silence broken
Here in my mind
Please believe me, I give you my promise
They will remember
I will remember
The times of my life
The sun goes down, I go down with it
Into a night of a thousand dreams
The moon goes 'round,I go 'round with it
Just for a moment my heart is free
Please believe me, I give you my promise
They will remember
We will remember
The hope in our lives
